Experience myriad hues of Telangana at Surajkund Mela

The newly-carved state Telangana is the ‘Theme State’ of this year’s Surajkund International Crafts Mela, which is showcasing its unique culture and rich heritage in an impressive manner. The unique handcrafted tribal jewellery, pearl sets, ‘pattu’ saris and artefacts from the state are evoking great interest among visitors.

Tribal jewels 

Craftsperson from Telangana, M Aruna has brought an exclusive collection of tribal jewellery and patches that are finding takers among women of all age groups. These are big size chunky neckpieces in white metal woven on threads of different colours. Not to miss, the studded hoops, jhumkas, hairpins and bracelets make for interesting buys. M Aruna tells that we have undertaken training in making tribal jewellery and it is in great demand at the Mela.  

Pearls of India

Hyderabad is famous for its pearls. K Sridhar has brought pearl strings that are fresh water pearls cultured to perfection starting from Rs 300-6000 per string. There are beautiful pearl sets with semi-precious ruby, emerald, sapphire stones studded in them. Also an attractive variety of earrings and hoops are available in different styles that are worth checking out. Just not pearls but strings of semi precious stones in varied sizes are what shoppers are lapping up at the Mela.



Creative wonders with stones

Nethala Neelaveni from Telangana is exhibiting an interesting collection of artifacts made from small and medium sized stones to create structures of animals, trees, gods, birds, creepers, women and men. Nethala is a national awardee and has made over 8000 plus stone artifacts that are indeed eye-catching. Her pieces start from Rs 800 onwards.

Authentic flavours of Telangana 

The food stall of Telangana at the Food Court of the Mela is serving a scrumptious spread of delicacies of the state. A beeline of customers at the Telangana stall are enjoying chicken dum biryani, mutton dum biryani, steam rice with Mamsam, Mirchi bajji, Telangana Mamsam. These dishes are priced at pocket-friendly rates starting from Rs 50-250.

Handwoven Ikkat fabrics & saris

One can shop the beautifully handspun Ikkat fabric from the Mela that is hand dyed and spun to perfection with geometrical designs. The fabric is available for dress material and not to miss, the ikkat duppattas in different shades and designs are an irresistible purchase. The dress material starts from Rs 200 per metre onwards and the duppattas start from Rs 900 onwards. Ravva Santhosh, a craftsperson, explains, this is a specialty of our state and it is an elaborate process to make Ikkat fabric and duppatta, it is double-dyed, then woven on loom and finished to perfection. Another attraction from Telangana are the ‘pattu’ saris in silk fabric, these are light weight saris with thread work in ikkat designs that take four to five days to be prepared. These are priced from Rs 1800-Rs 10,000.

Rhythms of Telangana

The folk dancers from Telangana are performing different folk arts like Oggudolu, Chindu Yaksha Ganam, Gussadi, Kommu Koya, Mathuri, Chirutala Ramayanam, Kolatam, Perini Natyam, Banjara, Lambadi, Bonalu at the Chaupal daily.

How to reach the Mela?

Nearest metro station is Tughlakabad metro station and NHPC Faridabad. Free shuttle service is available from Tughlakabad and Sarai metro station to the Mela every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 10 minutes on weekends.

Stay connected

The visitors at the Surajkund Mela are enjoying free wi-fi connectivity available for free for first half hour. Also the wi-fi connection for 15 days can be enjoyed at Rs 250/- only.

Drawing competition organised at Surajkund Mela

The Natyashala at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela was choc-o-bloc with school students participating in the drawing competition. Over 240 students from 19 schools from Faridabad and Gurgaon participated in the competition. The first prize was won by Arushi Aggarwal of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad, the second prize was bagged by Bhavishya Khatri of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad and the third prizes were given away to Ayanesh Dutta of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad and Priyanshu Chauhan of St John’s School, Sector 7 A, Faridabad. The consolation prizes were given away to Tanishka Chawla of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad; Ananyaa Aditi of Apeejay School, Sector 15, Faridabad and Namrata of DAV Public School, NIT-3, Faridabad.
